Minecraft on way to virtual reality
Suddenly Mark Zuckerberg was on stage with Samsung, when the press had a Samsung Gear VR headset perched on their head. Zuckerberg explained during his talk why virtual reality is the ‘next social platform’.
VR is the next platform, where anyone can create and experience anything they want. For right now, it’s mostly used for gaming. That’s quickly evolving.
The Facebook CEO asked the press to imagine what it is like to speak spontaneously with your friends in front of a cozy (virtual) campfire.
That’s why Facebook is investing so much in VR, so we can deliver these new social experiences. VR is going to be the next social platform. And that’s why we’re working with Samsung.
Zuckerberg also talked about videos in virtual reality and how fast it has already gained popularity.
We’ve been working to make Facebook the best platform for 360 video. 360 videos are even more immersive. You feel like you’re actually there. Our community already loves 360 videos. More than one million people are watching them every day. And more than 20,000 360 videos have been uploaded.
Facebook and Samsung are working behind the scenes to the next generation of social apps for virtual reality. One of the developments that state is on the agenda is “dynamic streaming” for the Gear VR. This means that area X in a video is broadcasted in a higher resolution (the area where someone is looking at) and the rest of the video is transmitted at a lower resolution, to ensure that videos can be quickly loaded and uses less bandwidth.
